SMM-1 - an Engine from Scavenged Parts with Owner Independence
Modern automotive infrastructure has devolved into a "proprietary hostage situation". Between sealed electronic modules, software locks, and the requirement for a corporate "service key" to diagnose even minor mechanical failures, vehicle owners have lost the ability to maintain their own equipment.
Today, we're introducing the SMM-1 (Standardized Movement Module), often called the "Power Brick." We're offering this project as a freely available, open-source blueprint to restore mechanical primacy and user independence to the driver.
The Philosophy: The "Diesel Ethos"
The SMM-1 is built on a "Junkyard-First" engineering philosophy. Instead of relying on fragile, rare-earth-dependent global supply chains, this engine is constructed from ubiquitous "heavy-metal survivors" found in commercial salvage yards across the globe. It's designed for an asset life of 30 to 40 years, repairable in a standard home shop using basic tools like a socket set and a MIG welder.
How it Works: Raw Physical Logic
The SMM-1 is a Vapor-Expansion Drive utilizing a closed-loop Water-Glycol (Steam) Rankine Cycle. By moving to an external combustion model, we've removed the silicon tech and replaced computerized sensors with raw physical interaction.
- The Muscle (Expansion Core): We repurpose the Copeland ZR Scroll (models ZR61, ZR72, or ZR81), a rugged commercial AC unit found on millions of rooftops. With a mandatory "Viton Seal Swap," these units generate massive torque from 200 C degree steam.
- The Skeleton (Structural Frame): To bypass expensive custom castings, the frame uses "Metal Origami"—a flat-pack, tab-and-slot design laser-cut from 1/4" A36 structural steel that self-aligns during assembly.
- The Handshake (Transmission): The module speaks the universal language of the S.A.E. #3 bellhousing pattern, allowing it to bolt directly to tank-like Eaton-Fuller FS Series manual transmissions found in medium-duty trucks.
- The Brain (Governance): We've replaced electronic ECUs with a purely mechanical Flyweight Centrifugal Governor (Detroit Diesel 71-series style), tuned via "Springs and Ears" logic.
Fuel Sovereignty: Mining Your Own Land
The heart of the SMM-1 is the "Hot Box"—a refractory-lined furnace with a modular 4-inch flange. Because it's fuel-agnostic, the engine doesn't care where its heat comes from. You can "mine your own land" for power using:
- Filtered Waste Motor or Vegetable Oil
- Biomass Pellets or Crop Waste
- Bio-Methane or Propane
Maintenance for a Generation
We've replaced "Check Engine" lights with analog needle gauges and mechanical 'stethoscope' ports. Maintenance is performed through a "Daily-Walk-About"—a tactile routine where the operator learns the machine's unique frequency to catch wear long before it causes a breakdown. For chemical monitoring, a simple EDTA titration "Color-Check" replaces drifting digital probes.
Status: Ready for Ferro-Validation
The project is currently at TRL 7 (Construction-Ready). We've finalized the Phase 1 Architecture Package, providing the hard dimensions and safety protocols (such as ballistic flywheel shielding) required for a professional shop team to begin a Proof of Concept (PoC) build.
This is more than an engine; it is Independent Infrastructure. It ensures that your vehicle is a tool for individual freedom, not a subscription-based module requiring factory permission to operate.
Scavenge the parts. Declare your independence.
