The Air-Rider - a New Kind of Transportation That Glides Above the Surface

I’ve been working on a project called the Air-Rider. It's a surface-detachment vehicle—essentially an industrial skateboard designed to float about 6 inches (15 cm) off the ground. It’s built on a "VW Bug" philosophy: rugged, honest, and mechanically transparent.

Here are the ABCs of how it works:

A. The Ride (Pneumatic Suspension)

The Air-Rider uses a tripod of ducted fans to create a pressurized cushion of air. This isn't about flying; it’s about surface rejection. By hovering 6 inches up, the machine stays clear of potholes, debris, and curbs. It turns the rough streets of a city into a smooth, frictionless glide.

B. The Build (Douglas Fir & Dumb Strength)

The chassis is made of Douglas Fir and Epoxy, utilizing the Gougeon Brothers' classic boatbuilding techniques.

  • Honest Materials: Because it is made of wood/epoxy composite, it is mechanically transparent; if you scratch it or ding it, you can fix it in your garage with wood glue and a clamp.
  • The Safe-Core: The Type IV hydrogen tank is a "de-tuned" heavy-duty vessel. We’ve over-engineered the rating—using a 700-bar tank but hard-capping it at 350-bar—to provide a massive 4.5:1 safety factor, making the core of the machine practically indestructible.
  • Manual Feedback: The dashboard is all analog. You have a pressure gauge and a voltmeter. There are no "black box" electronics—you learn to pilot the machine by feel and simple needles.

C. The Power (Hydrogen & Solid State)

The Air-Rider is carbon-negative and runs on a hybrid hydrogen system.

  • The Engine: A Nexa™ 1.2kW Fuel Cell provides steady power to a set of high-density NASA SABERS solid-state batteries (800–1100 Wh/kg).
  • The Refuel: It takes about three minutes to fill up at a standard hydrogen station.
  • The "Sigh": When you flip the toggle, the fans spin up and the machine "sighs" as it lifts. It’s a physical, tactile transition from being stuck to the ground to being completely free of friction.

Why the Air-Rider?

Modern transportation has become incredibly complex and difficult to maintain. The Air-Rider is the opposite. It is a simple, repairable, and rugged platform designed for the "Novelty of the Rise". It’s about making the commute a bit more human and a lot more frictionless.

It’s just a wooden deck, a cushion of air, and the open road.

Note: we've hard-coded the Air-Rider to a 6" rise above surface and a top speed of 15MPH. These are not the true capabilities of the system, but a safety determination for our PoC. Future generations can be developed to increase both height above the surface & the top speed.
