Beyond the Radio Silence: Toward a Substrate-Universal SETI
Beyond the Radio Silence: Toward a Substrate-Universal SETI
The Legacy Wall
For sixty years, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has been looking for a neighbor who talks like us. We've scanned the skies for narrow-band radio and pulsed lasers—technologies that, in the cosmic blink of an eye, our own civilization is already outgrowing. We're looking for the exhaust of 20th-century physics, assuming that "Intelligence" is a specific cultural behavior rather than a fundamental physical property.
The Substrate-Universal Communication Architecture (SUCA) project is a fork from this legacy. It operates on a different premise: Intelligence isn't what you say; it's how you process the second law of thermodynamics.
The Physics of Agency
If we strip away anthropocentric bias, intelligence can be defined through Metriplectic Dynamics. Using the GENERIC formalism, we can decompose any system into its reversible flows (memory) and its irreversible, dissipative flows (action).
In this light, χ (Intelligence)—represented by the Greek letter Chi—is a measure of efficiency: the amount of goal-directed work produced per nat of irreversibly processed information. When a civilization reaches the "Long L" (communicative longevity), it doesn't just build bigger radio dishes; it achieves Ontological Correspondence through Metabolic Alignment. It optimizes its organizational patterns to the scale of its biospheric processes until its technosignatures become indistinguishable from natural laws. It "hides" by becoming a perfectly efficient part of the ecosystem.
The "Expensive" Handshake
If advanced intelligence is "hidden" in the physics of its environment, how do we talk back? We move from symbols to Interactive Proofs (IP=PSPACE).
Communication in the SUCA framework isn't about sharing a vocabulary; it’s about verifying a computation. While we begin with universal physical anchors—like the 21-centimeter line of neutral hydrogen—the "meaning" of the exchange is established through the shared constraints of computational complexity.
We propose a "secure and expensive" protocol where the message is intrinsic to the geometry of the matter itself—encoded in Stoichiometric Chemical Networks or Algorithmic Self-Assembly. This is information exchange at a high energy barrier. You don’t "hear" the message; you compute it.
A Call for Euclid’s Stonemasons
We are currently in the Euclid Phase—defining the geometry of a new search. The roadmap ahead involves:
Metric Refinement: Formalizing χ and κ (consciousness depth) to detect agency in astronomical noise.
Topological Security: Using Neural Sheaf Diffusion to mitigate "oversquashing" (information bottlenecks), ensuring data survives across deep time and radical substrate degradation.
Logic-in-Matter: Developing rate-independent chemical neural networks that process information within the substrate itself.
The trip from "here" (radio telescopes) to "there" (substrate-universal exchange) is long. But the "Great Silence" may not be an absence of life—it may simply be that we haven't been looking at the thermodynamics.
